Primark to open 11 stores for 24 hours on december 2 as it extends opening hours before christmas – see the full list

PRIMARK is gearing up to reopen stores in england on december 2 by revealing plans to extend opening hours in the run-up to christmas.

The retailer will open 11 branches for 24 hours from 7am on december 2 until closing on december 3.

It then plans to extend opening hours in all of its 153 stores in england in the run-up to christmas.

Today it revealed that it will open branches until at least 8pm on weekdays until december 23.

While those located in shopping centres will open until 10pm, with others trading as late as midnight.

Non-essential shops are allowed to reopen in england from december 2, despite pubs having to close in tier 3 areas.

The extended opening hours are aimed at helping to reduce queues, as the retailer braces for reopening ahead of christmas.

Primark chief executive, paul marchant, said: “we are delighted to re-open our stores in england on 2 december, with longer shopping hours to give our customers more time to safely do their festive shopping.

"we have everything this season that our customers expect from primark, including our famous christmas jumpers, festive pyjamas and much, much more."

It follows similar announcements from aldi, tesco and sainsbury's to extending opening hours in the run-up to christmas.

Torchlight 3 forts should not be confused with trading outposts

Torchlight 3 was initially a massively multiplayer online experience as torchlight frontiers before shifting towards a more linear approach. The previously envisioned shared and persistent in-game world resulted in an assumption that players would be able to use forts for online trading as players do in say path of exile by summoning buyers to their home-base.

Speaking with segmentnext in a recent interview, developer echtra games confirmed that such kind of player-trading was considered at a point during development but never made it past the red tape. Torchlight 3 still offers player-trading but between party members only. As such, there is no marketplace where players can advertise a recipe or item for sale and then have interested buyers travel to a particular fort to complete the trade.

Do note that players of a party can always visit the forts of each other, and players will come across randomly placed forts of other players during their adventures. However, any trading aspects outside of a party will base on the forts players find while questing, if those forts even have something to offer to begin with.

While there currently is no direct or indirect trade in torchlight 3, players can both visit the forts of party members and find randomly placed forts as they journey through the world. We’ve talked about adding these various types of trade in the past, but it’s never made it to the top of the feature list.

For those unaware, torchlight 3 will allow players to build and upgrade their very own forts with various structures for gameplay-related buffs and services. Since they will serve as a personal player-hub, players will also be able to decorate their forts in hundreds of ways to call them home. Majority of those props will be free and not locked behind microtransactions.

Torchlight 3 remains in closed beta for now and will officially release for PC via steam later in the year, with playstation 4 and xbox one release following afterwards. Those interested can add the game to their wishlist and be notified when pre-orders start. Despite the rampaging COVID-19, echtra games is still confident of a 2020 release window.

Echtra games has also noted that a next-generation release can be considered but once torchlight 3 has landed successfully on the aforementioned platforms. Right now, all focus and resources remain dedicated to getting the game ready for playstation 4, xbox one, and PC.

Bent’s old fort national historic site, la junta

If you're traveling on the santa fe trail national scenic and historic byway, don't miss one of colorado's must-see attractions: a stop at bent's old fort national historic site near la junta. Built in 1833 by william and charles bent and their partner, ceran st. Vrain, the original trading post was a conduit of commerce for people living on the plains of the region. It had enough sleeping rooms to house up to 200 people, and it quickly became a center for cultural interaction between american settlers, mexicans and native americans. In fact, the bent brothers made great strides to maintain good relations with the arapaho, kiowa and cheyenne indians who hunted on the land around the fort.

In 1835, william bent married mis-stan-sta or owl woman, the daughter of white thunder, a holy man among the cheyenne people. Their marriage helped bridge the two cultures and maintain peace between them.

Today, you can stroll among the extensive network of rooms and corridors and visualize what life was like in an old trading post. The fort was reconstructed in 1976 and is made of adobe, an efficient building material used in the dry climates of the west. Employees at the fort dress in period clothing and encourage you to ask any questions you might have about the area's past.

Watch ute indian dancers clad in buckskin and other traditional garb engage in traditional dances in delta. Every summer, fort uncompahgre — a military fort turned living museum — hosts thunder mountain lives tonight. In addition to the dances, interpreters are on hand to demonstrate and explain the how and why of pioneer fur trapping, hide tanning and even arrowhead making. Throughout the rest of the year, visitors are encouraged to take a self-guided tour to learn about fort life and the lucrative and dangerous business of fur trapping. Before its life as an interpretive museum, fort uncompahgre stood as a staging point for united states soldiers who stood against american indian attacks on white fur trappers in western colorado.

See the lives and livelihoods of the white settlers and american indians of the area chronicled at the el pueblo history museum in pueblo. Once a fort, a great amount of goods came through el pueblo’s doors in the mid to late 1800s. It served as a sanctuary for a number of well-to-do traders who built their incomes by trading with the ute and apache indians in the area. The demise of the fort came at the hands of the same tribes with which they traded. Angered over the rampant spread of disease and encroachment on their land, a band of ute and apache warriors stormed the fort and captured or killed many of its inhabitants. The fort was abandoned shortly thereafter and, years later, other settlers built over it. Now, thanks largely to the efforts of a local historian, parts of the old fort have been reclaimed from the earth, and a history museum sits near the fort’s original site, featuring painstakingly replicated sections of the original fort.

Fort vasquez, platteville

Learn the inner workings of the fort vasquez fur-trading post found just north of denver, near greeley in platteville. Louis vasquez (the fort’s namesake) was a trapper in the early 1880s who made his living bartering furs from the cheyenne and arapaho indians in return for food and shot. A reconstructed fort stands almost exactly where the original was built. And now, you can tour the replica fort, as well as the museum and visitor center, also located on site. Unlike other trading posts of the era, fort vasquez did not succumb to american indian attack or fold due to extreme hardship. Instead, it was abandoned in the late 19th century due to the declining demand for its main commodity — beaver pelt.

In the 1800s, increased settler protection became a priority. Fort garland, built in 1858, was constructed in direct response to this need. With an infantry and cavalry unit — each with up to 100 soldiers — it protected new settlers in the san luis valley against resistant ute indians, who had made their traditional home there for centuries. Over its life, the fort drew distinguished soldiers, including storied frontiersman kit carson. Even fabled buffalo soldiers (black troops assigned to the western frontier after the civil war) were stationed there during the fort’s tenure. A congressional medal of honor recipient was among the ranks of the black soldiers stationed there. Today, it has been rebuilt as a living museum. Along with learning the history of this military fort, you can also view hispanic folk art on display. And don't forget to take a self-guided tour through one of the most interesting parts of the fort: the commandant’s quarters, a replica of the room used by kit carson.

Constructed in 1865 a half mile from the south platte river on a strategic tract of land know as morgan flats, fort morgan gave a commanding view of the entire river valley, as well as the north side of the south platte river. As the only army presence between julesburg to the east and the populated regions of the rockies in the west, it was the united states’ largest organized armed presence for miles. While the fort no longer stands, you can tour the fort morgan museum for military- and area-related history.

What forts did emigrants see along the trail?

An 1849 emigrant, A.J. Mccall, recorded in his diary passing by “a number of long, low buildings constructed principally of adobe, or sun dried bricks, with nearly flat roofs of brick” where the oregon trail meets the platte river. This was fort kearny, the first fort built to protect emigrants crossing the great plains. No matter what year emigrants traveled the oregon trail, they saw forts along the way. Some were fur trading posts that predated the trail, and others were military bases established to protect westbound emigrants and impress the indians.

In 1845, stephen watts kearny led five cavalry companies on a sweep of the plains during which he and his men passed the huge stephen meek wagon train. Kearny’s force of 250 dragoons was overwhelmed by the sight of 3000 emigrants crossing the countryside in their 460 wagons. Riding ahead, he held council near fort laramie with 1200 sioux indians and secured safe passage for oregon trail emigrants. The following year, congress mandated the construction of forts along the route to oregon, leading to the construction of fort childs on a site purchased from the pawnee tribe for $2000 in trade goods.

Fort childs was renamed fort kearny by dragoons transferring from the original fort kearny at the mouth of the platte river. The new fort kearny had a post office, which gave outbound emigrants the opportunity to send back letters assuring their friends and relatives that they were doing well. It also boasted the adjacent “hell-hole” communities of dobytown and dirty woman ranch, which were typical of the shantytowns that clung to the fringes of any military reservation.

Several fur trading posts were passed by oregon trail emigrants near where trails led to the various rendezvous points. Fort john was an american fur company post on the oregon trail near scotts bluff. It replaced an earlier robidoux trading post. Two competing fur trading posts were fort bernard and fort platte. The oldest fur trading post was fort william, dating back to 1834 when fur trader william sublette established a post at laremay’s (laramie) river. He prospered by undercutting the rocky mountain fur company and capturing the indian trade. The structure was typical of the era, with a rectangular stockade of cottonwood logs and elevated blockhouses on two corners and over the main entrance.

Fort william was later sold to lucien fontenelle and renamed fort lucien. Later still, fort laramie was built of adobe only a few yards away, and the adjacent wooden fort was dismantled for firewood. This sort of salvage was common on the frontier in order to save on both labor and wood, and some of the beams of fort laramie’s bachelor officers quarters (nicknamed “old bedlam”) came from fort william.

Mounted riflemen sent from fort leavenworth to fort laramie in 1849 found their route wrought with confusion as the epidemic of asiatic cholera cut through the jostling crowds of emigrants rushing to seek california gold. Modern fort laramie was a U.S. Army post from 1849 to 1890 and boasted up to 180 buildings at its height. Just before arriving at the fort, outbound emigrants passed the site of the grattan massacre, where on august 19, 1854, 2nd lt. John grattan and 28 soldiers attempted to arrest several sioux indians for butchering a wayward mormon cow. The arresting party killed a sioux chief, and the wrathful sioux slew them to a man. This incident was the start of over 35 years of intermittent hostility between the army and the sioux which culminated in the massacre at wounded knee.

Eight other forts and camps were constructed along the trail by the U.S. Army in addition to forts kearny and laramie. Most were only used briefly. Fort grattan was a defense point and supply depot established at ash hollow following the nearby battle of blue water. Fort mcpherson, popularly known as fort cottonwood, was completed in 1863 at the confluence of the north and south platte rivers. The cavalry soldiers killed at the grattan massacre were eventually reburied at fort mcpherson.

Camp mitchell was established just outside of scotts bluffs at mitchell pass. It was in operation for only three years, from 1864-’67. Fort fetterman was built where the bozeman trail split off from the oregon trail, just past fort laramie. Camp conner was sited at soda springs by irish immigrant general patrick connor. Cantonment loring protected emigrants and idaho miners near fort hall. The army’s fort boise was built in 1863 by oregon volunteers to protect emigrants on the trail and gold miners in idaho. The US army took over fort boise after the civil war, and it became the base of operations for general crook’s campaign against the snake river indians from 1866-’68, and also for general howard’s sorties against the nez perce and bannocks in 1878. It is now the site of the VA hospital in downtown boise.

Fort bridger was a palisaded trading post and blacksmith shop established in 1842 by jim bridger and louis vasquez to capitalize on the overland traffic. When it became obvious that most oregon and california bound emigrants were shortcutting the fort, it was sold to the mormons in 1853. The mormons burned the fort to the ground in 1857 to prevent its capture by US army forces. The army simply built their own fort bridger on the same site, incorporating a surviving stone wall of the original fort to save time and labor.

Fort hall was a stockaded trading post on the east bank of the snake river. It was established by nathaniel wyeth in 1834 and later sold to the hudson’s bay company. After oregon became a united states territory, the HBC departed and the post served the emigrant trade exclusively until it was abandoned in 1856. A new fort hall was built nearby by the US army in 1870 to control the indians of the area.

The HBC operated other forts in what used to be their territory. The original, or old fort boise was located at the confluence of the owyhee and boise rivers where they flow into the snake. It fell into disrepair after the hudson’s bay company left the area, and a new fort boise was built in 1863, as noted above. Those traveling by the whitman mission went past fort walla walla.

The dalles was the terminus of overland travel for oregon trail emigrants until 1846, when the barlow road was opened. Camp drum, opened in 1850 and renamed fort dalles in 1853, was manned by mounted riflemen. It became a quartermaster’s depot prior to being abandoned in 1867. The army sold the fort in 1877, but much of it was left intact by the local citizenry. The buildings of the fort are still present among the elegant old houses of the dalles.

Emigrants taking the columbia river from the dalles to oregon city stopped over at fort vancouver. The HBC trading post and regional headquarters under chief factor john mcloughlin was established in 1824 to replace fort george, originally the american outpost fort astoria established by john jacob astor’s pacific fur company. For many emigrants it was here for the first time since missouri that they ate at a table or slept beneath a roof.

Mcloughlin’s hospitality won him considerable respect, though it would eventually cost him his job. When the oregon boundary was settled in 1846, fort vancouver was downgraded to a trading post and the HBC built fort victoria as their new headquarters. In 1848 the US army decided to build an outpost on the plain above the HBC fort vancouver and to also call it fort vancouver. The barracks were built by captain bonneville and first used by the mounted riflemen that crossed the oregon trail from fort leavenworth in 1849. The US army fort vancouver went on to be their regional headquarters until world war II.

Army forts established before the civil war were struck by severe budget and manpower cuts after the southern states rose in rebellion. Planned bastions on the plains became ordinary forts. The soldiers who built and maintained them, half of whom were german and irish immigrants, earned about one-fifth as much as civilians doing the same work. On the other hand, the $11 a private earned in a month was in addition to food, housing, clothing, and medical attention.

Recruits were taught to ride, shoot, and fight in addition to receiving a basic education. Still, many pony soldiers deserted, taking their horses and guns with them. Meager salaries and a limit of 800 pounds of personal effects discouraged most soldiers from bringing their families west. Additionally, only officers got rooms to themselves, and many enlisted personnel slept in tents. The only women officially allowed on army posts were laundresses, one for every 25 men. Nearly all of them ended up married.

During the civil war, volunteer militias replaced regular army troops at most of the forts. It was their job to keep the indians under control until the regulars returned from the east.
