Let’s see an example of binary options

With binary options you know in advance how much you can earn. For each correct forecast you would generally earn between 80 and 95% of your investment. About binary options trading

The percentage profits that traders can earn are typically higher in the binary options market than in any other market. Type of binary options:

Up/down or high/low options

These options are the classic binary options. To trade, you just have to choose an underlying asset and determine if its value will be above or below the entry price at expiration time.

In/out, range or boundary options

Binary options shape as gambling problem for ASIC

It is a basic rule of investment that higher returns come with higher risks.

Too many ordinary people are still ignoring this precept for a very common class of financial products which leaves them open to fraud and scams.

Over the weekend, the herald reported on the huge losses sustained by investors in so-called "binary options" and "contracts for difference" (or cfds). It might be more accurate to say the participants are gamblers. They bet that a share, currency, stock index or commodity will rise above or below a certain price or stay within a certain range by a certain date or time. If it does not they lose all their cash or even go into deficit because cfds can allow consumers to lose more than they bet.

This has become a huge market with around 1 million clients. The companies licensed to sell these products hold $2.9 billion in clients funds as security against losses. They are often marketed via aggressive advertising campaigns and increasingly they are spruiked uncritically on social media.

Yet without highly sophisticated financial skills investors are very likely to lose a lot more than they win. The australian securities and investments commission in 2018 found that 80 per cent of clients who traded binary options lost money while 72 per cent who traded cfds lost money. A judge last year described the sector as a "classic example of unsophisticated retail investors seeking such financial heroin hits".

Punters are easy prey to scams because they often barely understand the products. In 2018, the FBI in the US brought criminal charges against a network run by israeli businessman yossi herzog, which included several companies in australia, who is accused of fleecing unsuspecting customers of $200 million.

The scam generated huge profits for the licensed dealers. In a melbourne court case last september the atmosphere at one firm was likened to unprincipled greed depicted in the film the wolf of wall street.

High-pressure salesmen steered customers towards "trading strategies" which were actually designed to ensure they lost as much as possible. Customers who tried their own strategies and won were cut off or targeted.

It is worrying that these scams were allowed to operate in australia. Regulators received thousands of complaints about the products but only took action two years ago against the fraudulent herzog companies after they had been operating for almost a decade.

ASIC has now launched court cases and in october a court imposed a $75 million payment on one herzog company. The cash, however, has gone missing and the fine might never be paid. ASIC has also just used powers granted as a result of the hayne royal commission into the financial system to limit the losses clients can suffer on cfds.

ASIC needs to do more to warn people against the risks of these products. Since the average income of a client is just $37,000 a year they are usually completely unsuitable as serious investments.

Of course, it is very hard to protect financially naive people from fraudsters, whether it be under the guise of binary options or nigerian wire transfers. Yet if ASIC continues to allow the products to be sold it must take a much more aggressive approach to licensing traders. ASIC might unwittingly be contributing to the boom in these products because licensing sends the false message that they are safe and supervised.

ASIC needs to ensure the companies that hold the licences meet basic standards. A liquidation hearing into one company – berndale, which collapsed last year owing clients $5 million – has heard the company had links to melbourne organised crime.

These are very risky products. More needs to be done to protect consumers.

What is an investment scam?

An investment scam is when someone offers you a fake - but often convincing - opportunity to make a profit after they hand over a sum of money.

There are three main types of investment scams

A totally fictitious investment which doesn’t exist.

The investment exists but the scammer takes the money instead of putting it in the opportunity.

The scammer pretends they’re representing a legitimate and trusted investment group, but they’re lying.

Investment scams in focus: cryptocurrency scams

Cryptocurrencies are virtual peer-to-peer currencies that are decentralised. This means the currency only exists online and is not controlled by a bank, treasury or country – you can’t get physical notes or coins from the bank.

Bitcoin is the most famous cryptocurrency, but there are more than 1,500 cryptocurrencies including other well-known ones such as ethereum and litecoin.

Many legitimate businesses – such as expedia and microsoft – accept cryptocurrencies as payment.

Quick transaction times is one of the reasons people like cryptocurrencies. But, cryptocurrencies also allow you to pay for or sell something anonymously, so they also appeal to scammers and shady online dealers.

Before a new cryptocurrency is launched on an exchange, you will be able to buy cryptocurrency coins or tokens as part of an initial coin offering (ICO). This is usually what's known as a pump-and-dump – when a price becomes inflated at launch, and then rapidly crashes.

If you don’t understand a cryptocurrency or an investment, avoid it. Do not hand over any money.

A scam can take many forms, this could include:

A fake cryptocurrency which doesn’t and won’t ever exist – for example if it’s a fake initial coin offering (ICO)

A bogus investment which promises to put money in a legitimate cryptocurrency

A dangerous website link that then downloads malware onto your computer

Investment scam warning signs

Companies contact you out of the blue. This could be through a cold call, text, message on social media, email or brochure.

They pressure you into making a rushed decision. This could be with a limited time offer, bonus or discount if you sign up before a deadline.

They call or email you repeatedly or keep you on the line. This is to try keep you engaged so they can pressure you to make a rushed decision.

It seems too good to be true. The old saying rings true - if they downplay the risks but the investment is high return, it could be an investment scam.

They ask you to keep the investment quiet. The scammer might tell you the investment opportunity is just for you and ask you not to tell anyone.

They’re not registered on the FCA website. In the UK, a firm must be authorised and regulated by the FCA to do most financial services activities. See if they’re registered with the FCA.

The FCA also has a warning list so you can check if you’re dealing with a known scam.

You will likely be approached either through a cold call on your landline or mobile or via an email or text. The questionable investment could be advertised on social media or in a pamphlet.

These are some of the most common scam investments.

Forex trading. Unauthorised traders offer guaranteed profits and most victims initially get a small return to think the trader is legitimate.

Online investment scams

Fraudsters now use platforms such as facebook, instagram and twitter to lure people into investing in cryptocurrencies, foreign exchange and binary options. The scammers often have convincing social media profiles or websites with bogus reviews.

The financial conduct authority warns that fraudsters promote themselves through social media channels by using pictures of luxury items, such as expensive cars and watches, to entice people.
